Writing a sincere apology
Nobody is perfect.
We’ve all done or said things we wish we could take back. That’s where apologies come in.
A sincere apology has the potential to clear the air and repair whatever damage has been done. You may even find that your relationship is better for it.
The biggest mistake most make when attempting to apologize is by using the word “but.” An apology is your moment to acknowledge your misstep—whether it’s intentional or accidental—and following it up with the word “but” negates whatever words came before it.
What to write
Here are the right words to use solo or as a starter when you’d like to apologize:
- There’s no excuse.
- I’m sorry.
- It was wrong of me to…
- Next time, I will…
- You have every right to feel the way you do.
- I owe you a huge apology.
- I’ve been thinking about our conversation, and I can’t believe how insensitive I was.
- I wish I hadn’t said what I said.
- Please know our friendship is invaluable to me…
- I’d never do anything intentionally to cause you pain.
Need a card or two to help you say you’re sorry? We recommend these.
